There is a "slight" disagreement between the prime minister, the bank association’s head and representatives of the sector, on whether there is enough competition for customers between Hungarian banks.

According to Ferenc Gyurcsány, there is a disparity between institutions and customers, which could be decreased by a higher competition for clients and stricter supervision rights.
Tamás Erdei, head of the Hungarian Banking Association said that despite "all contradictory opinions," banks do fight for customers. Gyurcsány, on the other hand, complained about the transparency of the sector and the high fees for customers.
Gyurcsány pointed out that the government will respect the independence of the bank of issue. However, he added, that the MNB’s independence does not equal with an opposition, the central bank has a serious cooperation duty with the government.
Gyurcsány, referring to the lately introduced measures, added that they will be followed by some fine tunings only.
