Hi Ansar, As a Business Coach by profession and a wananbe Caterham owner I read your post with great interest. Your vision and the purpose for Caterham seems clear enough to me, as does your current level of frustration. Just recently I have been Coaching 5 business owners in the art of establishing a culture of action centered leadership. Below is an extract of my follow up notes: Task (Remember, the overall task has to be repeated time and time again consistently well, so don’t burn the Team out by being over committed and over eager. Practice patience.) Team, The Task and the Individual Team Members leadership and management have to be kept in equal proportions here to create a Team that can look after itself and the Task with the minimum of supervision. Individual, create ‘Rules of the Game’ for them to follow, Job Specs and Task Matrix’s so that their roles are clearly defined and understood, plus regular performance appraisals, accentuating the positive and setting out to catch them doing things right. Delegation, selecting the appropriate times to check back on a delegated duty to ensure its successful completion and choosing the appropriate style at the time of checking. As follows: Coaching: (Where knowledge is short.) Policing: (Inexcusable failure to perform.) Play: (Where genuine effort is still insufficient.) Assertion, the ability to know and select from the 6 fundamental types of Assertion to create a dialogue that even in negative or adverse conditions creates Win/Win situations., which are as follows: Basic (For own needs, wants and opinions.) Empathetic (As above and recognising how the other person may feel.) Discrepancy (for when things are different from those agreed.) Negative (For when others are ignoring your rights repeatedly.) Consequence (For when prepared to use sanctions when other assertion types have failed.) Responsive ( For finding out the others needs, wants, and opinions. In terms of Leadership and Management, John Adair and Ken and Kate Back are my Guru's. I am also a great fan of Seth Godin, especially Linchpin' and The Dip' which I always recommend my clients to read. At the ripe old age of 57 it is still my ambition to own a 7.
